This sea-facing apartment is Located in Bandra, Bombay. This competition was conducted by archdais, and the competition brief aimed at designing the studio such that it efficiently tackles the shortage of space, to combine both living and working spaces.

The coastal setting of the studio encouraged us to create a mood board that included several natural materials. The colors were derived from natural elements like Sea, Sand, and Sun. Our idea was to include vegetation, explore cane and bamboo furniture, and, use natural fabrics of Jute, and cotton. We aimed at unleashing the power of white color with different textures that would expand the space and the earthy colored tones that would invoke interest by breaking down the monotony.

We have designed the studio to transform from an ordinary studio unit encompassing a living, dining, pantry, and bedroom, to a large living space to accommodate guests, and friends when there are occasions. As the folding doors open, the living space doubles up, and when the folding door closes, it gives rise to a private bedroom. So, on weekends when friends/family come over the space can be opened up, whereas on weekdays, it could function as any other studio unit where a small family lives comfortably.

The usage of furniture that is multifunctional like the sofa bed, poufs, and swivel chairs makes the space transform dynamically as required to suit the needs. Using this type of furniture acts as a great space-saving solution. The sofa bed can be used as a sofa or a bed, the poufs are a compact seating solution to add more seaters to the living area, and the bench provided on one side of the dining area also allows seating to be accessed from both sides.
