Empowering pathways

Our design for the blind school prioritizes inclusivity and functionality, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment. The cultural and administrative block at the front of the site invites
visitors, while the educational block at the rear minimizes unwanted noise.

The main entrance offers ample on-ground parking, and a dedicated drop-off area near the educational block ensures convenient access for students and faculty. Wayfinding and navigation are facilitated through clear pathways.

A sensory axis connects the three buildings, featuring sensory gardens with aromatic plants that aid wayfinding, navigation, and sensory engagement. These areas have handrails, sensory touch panels, and Braille number plates on door handles. Non-slip flamed kota stone and tactile tiles guide
students, promoting design for safety. Flexible and collaborative spaces like seating areas near the sensory garden encourage social interaction.

Given Guwahati's hot and humid climate, green pockets provide relief and comfort. An outdoor amphitheater and café offer flexible and collaborative spaces for students to engage and interact. Cultural rooms at the entrance pique interest in blind education.

The educational block spans two floors, with classes from 1 to 7 on the ground floor and classes from 8 to 12 on the upper floor. Sensory rooms are on the lower floor, while labs primarily used by older students are located upstairs. Planters along the parapet on the upper floor integrate the sensory garden, aiding
wayfinding for students. A ramp, lift, and staircase seamlessly connect the two floors to ensure accessibility for all.

Additionally, skylights with frosted toughened glass allow natural light to permeate the building, aiding plant growth and reducing blind spots and negative spaces. Our design aims to create a nurturing and empowering environment for visually impaired students, emphasizing sensory engagement, flexible and collaborative spaces, and design for safety, all while considering the local climate and the importance of green spaces in their education and social development.
